College book report
COLLEGE BOOK REPORT
Writing a college book report is similar to writing a book review, the distinct factor being that instead of evaluating the book you write a summary of it. Writing a college report is very much a part of one’s academic career and most often students commit the folly of understanding a book report as a book review and end up messing their work. So here are a few guidelines to get you started on your book report assignment. Remember systematic and dedicated work is a pre-requisite for writing a book report.
Read the book
If you are writing a book report then reading each and every page of the book first hand is very important and it is not a responsibility you cannot shirk off. While you read note down details regarding the book, author, publisher, the cover pages, the theme of the book, important passages, characters if any and some quality of it which is most evident and unique. If you happen to like some particular sentences in the book, write them down as you can cite them in your work. You may also read what other scholars have written about the book. Reading the book will also help you in closing down on a particular theme if any given by your guide, on which you have to write the report.
Write a thesis statement
The thesis statement in one or two sentences should state the argument of the paper. Do not simple write about the book and your opinion about it. The report should be analytic and the analysis should be bases on the arguments that you will put forward.
Make an outline
The outline of the report structures the whole report. You can decide what information should go into the paragraph, the body and the conclusion. The body of the paragraph should consist of at least three arguments and the conclusion should restate the thesis statement.
Writing the report
Avoid plagiarism- this should be your mantra in the introductory paragraph give details about the book, its authors and any information that is relevant. Moving on to the body of the report, the writer should first give a summary of the book and then discuss about the character, plot and the literary elements. Introduce the arguments that would place the report in its proper context. In the conclusion restate the thesis statement and show how it can be logically derived from the arguments presented in the body. Make sure that you summarise the book and say why you would recommend it for reading.
Edit and revisit the draft
This should help you to rectify the errors in the copy that you have written and edit and make changes to what you have written.
Cite the books which you have referred to in the course of your writing.
Follow these guidelines and let the creative juices flow in and writing your book report will no more seem like climbing a steep hill.
